The thing I also like about project management is to get all different kinds of people together working towards a common goal. They each have to do their thing, their part of the project tasks, like the cogs of a clock, even when spread over different countries or even continents across the world. Good and motivated teams are a critical factor of a successful project.

Of course, in most cases the reason for implementing a change is to solve a problem, so I don't think we are all that far off. :-)

However, I do also love the creativity aspect of it. And I am always stunned when I meet a PM who approaches project management like they are dusting a piano instead of playing one. It always strikes me as so limited and lifeless, and the most sure-fire way to inspire boredom and disinterest that I could possibly imagine.

I think good project managers are like concert pianists; I think exceptional ones are like the conductor.

I'd say that project management is more about making things done than about solving problems. While of course project without any problem are rarity that's not the clue of project management.

Personally on PM work I appreciate ability to learn constantly, changes in a way we work on projects and meeting different people. And I love the feeling when everything is finished and you know the team has done good job.

Nice post -- I find so many things to enjoy as a project manager. Particularly the opportunity to learn new things and then apply them across a variety of industries and organizations!
